- How to Redirect a Page or Pages in WordPress
- How to Redirect 404 Pages in WordPress
- How to Redirect Home Page / Index Page in WordPress
- How to Redirect Login Page in WordPress
- How to Redirect Page to Category in WordPress
Prerequisite Component:
You need to have Google Webmaster tool enabled for your website. I’m assuming you have successfully claimed and verified your website in Google Webmaster tool (Search Console). Submitted your website’s sitemap.xml in webmaster tool. And your robots.txt file is accepting Googlebots.
How to Find URL Errors (404/Not Found) for My Site:
First login to your Google Webmaster tool. If you have multiple websites then you will see the list of all your websites. If you have only one website claimed and verified in Google Webmaster Tool then you will see that site information. In my case, I get this list of my websites when I log onto my search console.

Now click on the site link for what you want to find out the 404 or not found pages. You will see something like the following image:
You can click on “Crawl Errors” underneath the Current Status or you can click on the “Crawl” menu underneath Google Index menu. If you click on “Crawl” menu underneath Google Index menu then it show different options, please make sure you click on Crawl Errors. There are three tabs you will see – Desktop, Smart Phone and Feature Phone. Under these three tabs there are four tabs – Soft 404, Access Denied, Not Found, and other. You need to concentrate on Soft 404 and Not found urls.
So you have identified 404 pages/urls for your website. Great! Now we need to move on to redirection part.
You can set redirection for your wordpress site and its pages in many ways. You could use .htaccess file or you can use redirection plugin in wordpress like Simple 301 redirects, Quick Redirects or premium Yoast SEO plugin! I also use Yoast SEO plugin and the latest version of this great plugin has a new section called “Search Console”.
If you click on “Search Console” then it will show you how many soft 404 and not found URLs you have for your website.
If you mouse over to a link you will see three options – create redirect, view and mark as fixed. Now if you click on “click redirect” a pop up window will open and you will see the following message if you are a Free user like me for Yoast SEO plugin.
I know it’s pathetic but I also understand that they have to find a way for their living! Hence I don’t want to blame them as there are still some great, free redirection plugin available for WordPress sites.

B. How to Redirect 404 Pages in WordPress
As you have a list of not found and soft 404 pages either from Yoast or Webmaster tool, you can easily fix the errors. You could follow the steps mentioned in previous paragraph to fix those soft 404 pages. But there might be more 404 URLs that need to be fixed. To find out further 404 URLs, click on “404 Error Links” in SEO Redirection plugin. You might see something like this:
Now you can either click on green arrow under “Redirect” column for each link or you can copy the 404 link and manually fix it through “Custom Redirects” option.
C. How to Redirect Home Page / Index Page in WordPress
It’s easy and I think you have got the idea how to do it already! Follow what I described in Step A and set like following:
Replace yourdomain.com with your own domain and check the extension of your site. That might be index.html, index.htm, index.php or just the domain itself (http://www.yourdomain.com/)!
So, in the first “Page” field, put the Home Page / Index Page URL and in the second “Page” field put the redirect URL. Make sure it’s 301 (SEO), that’s permanent redirection. After that, click on “Add New”. And you are done! You have successfully redirected Home Page / Index Page!
D. How to Redirect Login Page in WordPress

In the first “Page” field, put the wp-login.php at the end of your domain and in the second “Page” field replace “preferredURL” with the redirect URL of the new login page. After that, click on “Add New”. And you are done! You have successfully redirected login page!
