There are many people who believe that they know:
- how alexa ranking works
- how does alexa traffic ranking work
- how alexa ranking works
- how does alexa ranking works
- how does alexa page rank work
- how do alexa rankings work
but they don’t! I don’t mean you. I mean them! Even I was not so sure about how does alexa ranking works to be very honest before I actually researched on this and read couple of helpful articles. If you are wondering how does exactly alexa ranking works then you should continue reading this post. It will take only five minutes from you but it will surely clear all the top myths about the Alexa Traffic Rank!
Here are a couple of questions about Alexa traffic rank which turn up very often:
- Why my site’s alexa rank is getting worse when my website analytics plainly show that I’m receiving more traffic?
- Why my website alexa rank is always jumping around?
Here are the two core causes why alexa ranks vary in ways that will most likely not make good sense when you glimpse at them.
To start with, Alexa Rank of a given site is not only predicated on traffic but takes into account the traffic to all the websites and ranks websites relative to one another. As your website is positioned comparative to other websites, variations in traffic to other websites influence your site’s ranking.
On a regular basis, Alexa forecasts the average day-to-day visitors and page views to each and every website over the past three months. The website with the best combination of page views and visitors over the last three months is ranked at number 1. The website with the lowest is positioned someplace around thirty million! If no body in alexa’s measurement panel went to a website over the last three months, there will be no rank by any means for that site.
Here are some top myths about Alexa:
Myth 1: Alexa simply calculates traffic from individuals who have set up the Alexa toolbar.
The answer is “not true”. Alexa’s computation panel is established on a massive and diverse set of browser plug-ins and extensions. Alexa toolbar is merely one of several browser plug-ins that come with Alexa data. Plus, for websites that have set up the Alexa Verification Code, Alexa directly calculates traffic from all site visitors no matter if they have a browser plug-in/extension installed. Below is a screenshot on this myth!
Myth 2: Alexa solely measures site owners and Internet marketers.
This is absolutely nonsense! Like myth 1, it’s not true. I don’t know how people get this bogus idea in their mind! Traffic panel of Alexa is based on hundreds of thousands of people using more than 25,000 different browser plug-ins or extensions that appeal to a wide target audience. Here is a real image of this myth from a world known forum’s member!
Myth 3: Making a claim for a site impacts its rank.
You do not have to claim your website to get measured by Alexa. Claiming ones website has no effect on alexa rank. Alexa have a free plan to claim a site and using that free plan you can keep your website description and contact information that ensures you will not miss out on any prospective business opportunities from the tens of millions of people who visit Alexa per month.
Myth 4: Setting up Alexa widget might improve rank.
Unfortunately my friend the answer is no! Alexa does provide rank widgets that permit you to highlight your website’s rank to site’s visitors but the widgets are certainly not used to measure a site’s traffic.
Myth 5: My site’s alexa rank will get better if traffic goes up on a particular day
Not really! The alexa rank is refreshed daily, but it’s based on to your site visitors over the trailing of last three months. Therefore, one day’s worth of traffic is about 1/90th of all the traffic utilized to position your website. Furthermore, a website’s rank is comparative to other sites. Hence, variations in traffic to other websites impacts your website’s rank as well.
Myth 6: Money talks! I can pay Alexa to get a better rank
WTH? Really? Absolutely not true. Alexa has several options including free and pro products. Pro products can help someone to get more traffic to the site and that may possibly turn lead to a better ranking but it doesn’t mean that one can pay alexa to get a better rank. Additionally, if you apply the Alexa verification code on your website, alexa can easily evaluate your website’s traffic rather than forecasting it. Straight computation will render your website a more precise rank, nevertheless more accurate doesn’t really mean a better rank.
Final Thoughts:
These are the facts. Most of the people think that alexa is crap and doesn’t have any value. But I want to tell them alexa does have a value. It increases the respect of a website. If your website’s alexa rank is below 100k then your site is respected by others, believe it or not! Doesn’t matter if your website gets too many automated traffic or bots traffic. I don’t think that’s how alexa traffic rank works. But final thing is, people will respect your website and somehow some freaks get jealous at the same time and as they are not able to rank their websites down to 100k, they fake the matter of facts how does alexa traffic ranking work.
Moreover, for SEO people like me, there is nothing left except alexa and SERP as Google’s pagerank is dead! If any of you think that alexa is not working properly then search for “Google.com” in alexa.com! Google is placed at number 1 in alexa. Is there another website that gets better traffic than Google? If you can’t prove that then you can’t also prove that alexa is not working properly.

I agree with what you’ve said with regards to Alexa. For me, it matters a lot. Yes, you gain respect to some other bloggers who wish to improve their alexa rank.
My blog is 4 months old and I can see the improvement of my rank daily which normally dropped down to 500million each week. I just started paying attention with my Alexa and started seeing the results based on how much effort I put into.
I am on my 30 day blog challenge and that’s when it started to improved. My alexa rank to start with was 14million, and now I am almost below 1 million, probably reach 100k next month as predicted due to daily activities.
oops sorry…500 thousand i mean dropped in a week
